TheoldestofthethreemammothswasdiscoveredneartheKrestovkaRiverinSiberia.Itwasabout1.2millionyearsold.Another,fromneartheAdychaRiver,wasbetween1and1.2millionyearsold.Thethird,fromneartheChukochyaRiver,wasaround,yearsold.
"ThediscoverywasbyfartheoldestDNAeverrecovered,"saidgeneticist(遗传学家)LoveDalénoftheCenterforPalaeogeneticsinSweden.Heledtheresearch,whichwasrecentlydescribedinastudyinthepublicationNature.
However,DNAcanbedamagedovertime.NewresearchmethodsarenowpermittingscientiststorecoverevenolderDNA.Asthesemethodsfurtherdevelop,DalénsaidhethinksitshouldbepossibletoworkwithDNAthatisuptothreemillionyearsold.
